HAMMER TOE

COMMON PROBLEMS

WHAT IS A HAMMER TOE?

A hammer toe is a deformity that causes one or more of your toes to bend or curl downwards. This condition can cause physical discomfort, in addition to being unattractive in appearance. With some shoes, hammer toes may actually increase the friction on top or or on the end of the toes or under the metatarsal heads, resulting in calluses or corns. These deformities that “contract” the toes can be flexible or rigid in nature.

THE SOLUTIONS

WHAT CAN I
DO ABOUT IT?

Several cushions or pads can be placed inside your shoes. They can be fitted with a removable bandage to allow you to wear them in all your shoes. This cushioning works well for “flexible” hammer toes. Gel tubes can be placed on toes that are sore as a result of rubbing. If these measures don’t provide relief, especially when the deformity is rigid, bone reconstructive surgery may be recommended.
