COMMON PROBLEMS

SMELLY FEET

Smelly feet (or bromhidrosis) can be troublesome, uncomfortable and embarrassing. It’s the excessive sweating, combined with bacterial agents, that cause the unpleasant odours. Therefore, by controlling the perspiration of the feet, you can also control the characteristic stinky odour.

Feet can produce a lot of sweat, as they have more sweat glands than on any other part of the body. Unlike sweating of the hands, when your feet sweat, the moisture can’t evaporate as easily. This is because our feet tend to be locked up in shoes for long periods of time. Technically speaking, a type of bacteria that lives naturally on your skin produces isovaleric acid, which then breaks down causing foot odour.

THE SOLUTIONS

WHAT CAN I
DO ABOUT IT?

Start with optimal foot hygiene to reduce the amount of bacteria that can colonize your feet. Bathing your feet every day in warm water with mild soap and thoroughly drying them also helps. Change your socks during the day; even your shoes, if necessary. Wear moisture-absorbing socks such as wool, cotton or other naturally absorbent materials. Avoid wearing nylons. Get in the habit of changing your shoes every day so they have a chance to completely dry out. Remove the soles if possible to facilitate drying.
