BUNIONS
COMMON PROBLEMS
BUNIONS
A bump at the base of the big toe can cause discomfort, in addition to being unattractive for certain patients. Hallux abducto valgus, or a bunion, usually affects women more than men. The culprit is often the wearing of high heel shoes, which exert unnatural pressure on the toes. Otherwise, bunions may originate from foot hypermobility, ligament hyperlaxity, flat feet or other disorders. The famous bunion bump can become painful when rubbing against the shoes. The pain often occurs with movement, making every step uncomfortable. Putting on shoes can become problematic as well.
The “bunion bump” is actually a sign of bone deviations in the forefoot. The bone, which moves with the big toe, deflects inward. Over time, this causes the big toe to veer toward the second toe, actually throwing the foot out of alignment. Bone deformity appears gradually, becoming more and more pronounced over time. Bunions can also lead to the development of hammer toes of the adjacent toes.
