COMMON PROBLEMS

SMELLY FEET

Smelly feet (or bromhidrosis) can be troublesome, uncomfortable and embarrassing. It’s the excessive sweating, combined with bacterial agents, that cause the unpleasant odours. Therefore, by controlling the perspiration of the feet, you can also control the characteristic stinky odour. Feet can produce a lot of sweat, as they have more sweat glands than on any other part of the body. Unlike sweating of the hands, when your feet sweat, the moisture can’t evaporate as easily. This is because our feet tend to be locked up in shoes for long periods of time. Technically speaking, a type of bacteria that lives naturally on your skin produces isovaleric acid, which then breaks down causing foot odour.

THE SOLUTIONS

WHAT CAN I
DO ABOUT IT?

Start with optimal foot hygiene to reduce the amount of bacteria that can colonize your feet. Bathing your feet every day in warm water with mild soap and thoroughly drying them also helps. Change your socks during the day; even your shoes, if necessary. Wear moisture-absorbing socks such as wool, cotton or other naturally absorbent materials. Avoid wearing nylons. Get in the habit of changing your shoes every day so they have a chance to completely dry out. Remove the soles if possible to facilitate drying.

Hyperpronation of the feet – Flat feet

HYPERPRONATION OF THE FEET – FLAT FEET

COMMON PROBLEMS

HYPERPRONATION OF THE FEET

The collapse of the arch, which many refer to as “flat feet”, is a common condition seen in patients of all ages. Flat feet are easily noticed by yourself or a family member – who is possibly also affected, as the condition is hereditary in nature. There are also numerous other causes. Consequences of flat feet include pain in the feet, ankles, legs, knees, hips and lower back in particular. The development of bunions can also be an indication of hyperpronation (excessive inward motion of the feet) of the feet. During loading (standing) and walking, the collapsed arch increases the stress and inflammation of various musculoskeletal structures of the lower limbs. Ligamentous hyperlaxity, pregnancy, obesity, heredity, unequal leg length and other causes can lead to the appearance of flat feet. This type of foot condition does not necessarily present any symptoms, but it’s not uncommon to see several pathologies develop, such as: plantar fasciitis, Lenoir’s heel spur syndrome, Achilles tendonitis (inflammation of the Achilles tendon), posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (a muscle in the leg extending to the foot), metatarsalgia, sesamoiditis, knee pain and back pain.

THE SOLUTIONS

WHAT CAN I
DO ABOUT IT?

The symptoms of flat feet can be relieved by various means, including: wearing good quality shoes, using strappings, doing stretching and strengthening exercises and by wearing custom-made orthotics. Sole inserts, or orthotics, may also prevent other undesirable conditions or slow down their progression by establishing a more normal function of the foot. In addition, orthotics provide a longer-term solution, especially when diagnosed at a young age.
